Serbian students rally in Belgrade in latest protest over train station disaster | Serbia


Hundreds of university students gathered in Belgrade on Wednesday to protest the policies of Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić and the ruling Progressive Party of Serbia (SNS), which they blame for last month’s railway disaster in which 15 people died.

The newly renovated concrete roof of the train station in the city of Novi Sad. northern caves on November 1, killing 14 people and three to hurt. One of the wounded later died.

After a 15-minute silent vigil to commemorate the victims of the accident, the students went to the public prosecutor’s headquarters in Belgrade to deliver a thousand letters of protest to the office of Zagorka Dolovac, the chief state prosecutor.

“Students demand that you fight for law and justice, without any political or bad environment,” the letter said.

Students, opposition and civil groups criticize Dolovac and prosecutors deny anything for the slowness of the investigation into the disaster.

The students carried banners depicting bloody hands, which they say represents the government’s responsibility for the veiled collapse.

Opposition parties and civil groups also took to the streets; it is a foolish accident in a decaying construction from corruption and nepotism.

The ruling coalition denies this and Vučić said those who are responsible should be held to account.
