Four pedestrians were hit by a car in west London in the early hours of Christmas and a man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
The The Metropolitan Police said officers were called at 12:45 a.m. on Wednesday to reports of a collision involving a car driving on the wrong side of the road on Shaftesbury Avenue in Covent Garden.
Four pedestrians were taken to the hospital, and one is in critical condition, the police said.
The driver, a 31-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. The incident was confirmed as an isolated incident, not related to terror.
Police said they believe the suspect was “involved in an altercation at the nightclub before he got into his car and climbed onto the sidewalk.”
Shaftesbury Avenue is the main road in London’s theater district, lined with performance venues, bars and close to Soho and Covent Garden.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Stuart Cundy said: “Officers responded quickly to this report, working closely with the City of London Police to arrest the man within minutes.
“Detectives are making rapid progress in their investigation as part of this investigation.
“The suspect is believed to have been involved in an altercation at the nightclub before getting into a car and climbing onto the pavement.
“Several scenes remain at the location today.
“This has been confirmed as an isolated incident not related to terror.”
