Santa Claus and his reindeer have started their journey around the world, making billions of stops in less than 24 hours.
Each one Christmas Eva, Crazy — North American Aerospace Defense Command — provides real-time tracking of Santa’s sleigh as it moves across the sky.
His tradition dates back to 1955 when a mistake in a department store ad prompted a young child to call the Colorado Army Command Center and ask to speak to him. Santa Claus.
Air Force Col. Harry Shoup, who took the call that night, played along and convinced the child he was Santa Claus. As more and more calls came in, he assigned a clerk to handle the inquiries, beginning a holiday custom that Norad continued after its creation in 1958.
For decades, Norad has swapped its usual airspace surveillance duties to answer children’s questions about Santa’s journey and his astonishing present-delivery operation.
Each year, at least 100,000 children call the organization to inquire about Santa’s location. Millions still follow them online – in nine languages - while St. Nick races along the Earth’s meridians.
Stay tuned for updates as we follow Santa’s magical route around the world.
