League upholds 3-game suspension for Houston LB Azeez Al-Shaair after hit on Trevor Lawrence
NEW YORK (AP) – The NFL and NFL Players Association have upheld the three-game suspension without pay of Houston linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair for repeated violations of player safety rules following his violent hit to the head of Jacksonville’s Trevor Lawrence, who suffered a concussion and is now on injured reserve.
Hearing officer Ramon Foster, jointly appointed by the league and the players’ union, ruled on Wednesday.
Al-Shaair’s punishment was announced Tuesday by NFL vice president of football operations Jon Runyan. In his letter to Al-Shaair, Runyan noted that he has had several personal foul violations and sportsmanship-related rule violations in recent seasons.
His most glaring came Sunday in a 23-20 win at Jacksonville.
Back in the starting lineup after missing two games with a sprained left shoulder, Lawrence struggled in the second quarter and began to slide. But Al-Shaair raised his forearm and let loose on the defenseless quarterback.
In his letter to Al-Shaair, Runyan called the hit “unacceptable and a serious violation of the rules of the game”.
“The video shows you hitting Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence in the head/neck area after he clearly falls into a foot slide,” Runyan wrote. “You steered with your forearm and helmet and hit your opponent’s head/neck area hard when you have time and space to avoid that contact.”
Houston general manager Nick Caserio defended Al-Shaair, saying he doesn’t think the league is using consistency to issue punishments like these.
“I probably speak for a lot of teams, not just the Houston Texans, but I think the only thing teams are asking for is consistency in the league,” he said. “And I would say that in this situation, frankly, there is no consistency in terms of the level of discipline that has been given.”
Al-Shaair will not be eligible to return to Houston’s active roster until after the team’s Christmas Day game against Baltimore. Al-Shaair has a base salary of $1.5 million this season, meaning it will cost him about $265,000 to miss three games.
Lawrence clenched both fists after the impact — movements consistent with what’s known as the “fencing response,” which can be common after a traumatic brain injury. He was on the ground for several minutes as his teammates defended him and attacked Al-Shaair in what turned into a brawl.
As Al-Shaair left the field after being sent off, the fans started shouting at him. Veteran Jaguars guard Brandon Scherff joined in and caused another altercation with Al-Shaair. Texans teammate Will Anderson picked up Al-Shaair and was escorting him off the field when a fan threw a water bottle and hit Anderson in the helmet. The ventilator was later ejected.
Runyan also explained Al-Shaair’s post-impact behavior in announcing the suspension.
“Following the illegal hit, you proceeded to engage in a fight, which escalated when you knocked an opponent to the ground with his mask,” he wrote. “After the referee announced that you were disqualified for the impact and your unsportsmanlike conduct, you removed your helmet and again collided with your opponent as he walked down and across the field, which started a another physical confrontation near the end zone.”
This is the third time this season that Al-Shaair have been punished by the league. Last week, he was flagged and then fined $11,255 for an out-of-bounds hit on Titans running back Tony Pollard.
He was fined earlier this year after punching Bears running back Roschon Johnson on the sideline in Week 2. That happened during a fight that started after his hard hit on the quarterback Caleb Williams near the line was not flagged.
“Your lack of sportsmanship and respect for the game of football and all those who play, coach and enjoy watching it is troubling and does not reflect the core values of the NFL,” Runyan told Al-Shaair in the letter . “Your continued disregard for the NFL’s rules of the game endangers the health and safety of both you and your opponents and will not be tolerated.”
