Subriel Matias and Teofimo Lopez are close to a deal to fight on March 15 for Theo’s WBO 140 lb title on ESPN PPV. Former IBF welterweight champion Matias (21-2, 21 KOs) will look to become a two-time 140lb champion against Lopez.
Matchroom-promoted Matias has fought once since losing his IBF belt to Liam Parro on June 15, and is looking to dethrone Lopez.
“Teofimo Lopez and Subriel Matias are finalizing a deal for a March 15 fight for Lopez’s WBO junior welterweight title, sources told ESPN.” The fight will be carried on ESPN+ PPV. There is no location yet for this action-packed fight between one of the best fighters in the sport and a former champion,” said Mike Coppinger on Ks.
Teofimo has been pushing for a big fight for the last four years, but his promoters have failed to offer him anything convincing. Matias may be the best Lopez can hope for right now until something opens up for him.
A loss to Mathias would be devastating for Lopez, who has won his last five fights since losing to George Kamboss Jr. on Nov. 27, 2021.
