Fireworks in the basement of a Spencer home exploded as firefighters worked to put out the flames Sunday night.
The fire started at a home at 4 East Ave. to Spencer, according to NBC Boston. But it quickly spread to two more houses.
There were propane tanks and fireworks, yes illegal in Massachusetts for those without a certification or license, in the basement of the first home, Spencer Fire Chief Robert Parsons told the press.

The first house is a total loss, WCVB reported, with the second house also likely a total loss. The exterior siding of the third house melted.
Part of the problem with putting out the fire is that there were no fire hydrants on the street, the news outlet reported. In general, there are very few fire hydrants in the entire city of Spencer.
Firefighters tried to get water from a nearby pond but fell through the ice, WCVB reported. The two firefighters involved were fine.
Ultimately, they had to bring in tankers to deliver water along narrow roads, the press reported.
Authorities have not yet said what caused the fire.
