True cinematic turkeys achieve a kind of transcendence. Think of Cats or Last Christmas | Kathryn Bromwich


AAs a perennial fan of the “so-bad-it’s-good” sub-genre of movies, I approach each one. Christmas mixed with trepidation and trepidation. If at the other end of the spectrum we have the magic of Christmas films (It is a wonder of life, Alone House, They all just sounded), through the mediocre clowns, the sense of the present time, what I hope to find at the other end is something so truly terrifying that it achieves a special kind of transcendence.

Some were recent contenders Last Christmas (A January resolution to eat more vegetables like a Christmas film, a weird Brexit subplot; enough George Michael) and Cats (really creepy, but only to the point of confusion, the cumulative depth of the film progresses, so that by the time Judi Dench says “the cat is not the dog”, you have reached the collective hysterics.

Over the past few years, streamers have tried to build hype for their “so-bad-it’s-good” offerings. Creating the worst possible film became an explicit goal, which resulted in almost endless cooking exchanges, identity swaps, princes and minor cases appropriated in fictional European countries. Look how bad this is, the screen seems to say. It’s not terrible, it emphasizes itself. Even these films are undoubtedly bad, but in a pedestrian sense: the dialogue style is punctuated with awkward silences, the threads that lie in wait for oblivion, behind the eyes of the dead spectators. (There is one exception, I admit Hot Frostya very silly film that executes its premise – a buffoon snowman comes to life to help a lonely widow who doesn’t have her own DIY – as knowledgable as can be hoped for).

But in order for a movie to be something close to breaking through, there must be something to fail: the filmmaker must at least try to make it good. Knowing how terrible a movie can be while pretending to be an audience is lazy and ultimately unsatisfying. You cannot begin to become a true order from the assumption of malice: evil must be entered upon you.
