The BBC Sports Personality of the Year The ceremony returns tonight as the British public vote for their favorite eventful sports star in 2024.
A panel of judges made a shortlist including Jude Bellingham, Joe Root, the darts sensation Luke LittlerParalympian Sarah Storey and Olympic gold medalists Alex Yee and Keely Hodgkinsonwith the latter being the early favorite to win the award.
And fans will vote for the winner during tonight’s show, with all six athletes looking to join the likes of Lewis Hamilton, Andy Murray and Mary Earps as winners.
Mark Cavendish was confirmed as the winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award after breaking the record for most stages of the Tour de France in July, while there will also be gongs for Young Sports Personality, Best Foreign Athlete, Team of the Year, Best Sports Moment and Unsung Hero of the Year.

Luke Littler is another contender, and now the 17-year-old is enjoying a breakout year in the world of darts after becoming the youngest ever player to reach the final of the PDC World Darts Championship.

When is the sports personality of the year ceremony?
The ceremony will take place on Tuesday 17th December in Salford, Greater Manchester.
It will be broadcast live on BBC One, starting at 7pm. Subscribers can also watch on BBC iPlayer, while it will also be covered on the BBC Sport website and app.

The BBC Sports Personality of the Year The award returns this week, with some of the biggest names in British sport vying to join the likes of Lewis Hamilton, Andy Murray and Emma Raducanu as winners.
The prestigious awardwhich is judged by public vote, is awarded to the athlete who is considered to have been the most successful in the past year, although several other factors are taken into account, such as the athlete’s overall impact.
2023 goalkeeper Lions Mary Earps she won the award for her performances at the Women’s World Cup, which included the now famous penalty save in the final against Spain.

Some brilliant British athletes are shortlisted for the award after an eventful 2024, although names such as Jude Bellingham and Joe Root look set to miss out on Olympic medalist Keely Hodgkinson, who won gold at Paris 2024 with a memorable performance in the 800 meters.
