BEN WHITAKER has vowed to “right it wrong” after what happened against Liam Cameron in October.
Their welterweight fight on the Artur Beterbiev-Dmitry Bivol undercard made headlines because of how the fight ended. After five competitive rounds, the fight ended in the sixth, when both fell over the ropes, injuring Whittaker’s ankle and neck. The result was a technical tie with 58-58, 58-57 and 57-58.
The end left Cameron, 23-6-1 (10 KOs), angry and frustrated, leading the Yorkshireman to criticize and mock Whittaker, 8-0-1 (5 KOs), online. Since their fight on October 12, the 2020 Olympic silver medalist has said nothing until a public training session at IBA Night of Champions this week.
“I couldn’t go on, but when I go and beat him in the next fight, then I’ll have a lot to say,” commented Whittaker.
However, the rematch may not be easy. Cameron, who was a free agent, is now promoted by Frank Warren and Queensbury Promotions. While Whittaker is promoted by Boxer and Ben Shalom. And as we saw during the Oct. 12 fight week, the relationship between Warren and Shalom is not the best.
“You never know what he’s going to do, with his promotional deal now he might have a different path (in mind), he might think, ‘I don’t need it right now.'” Whittaker said.
“But after that, the way people talk, it’s only right.” I just want to correct that mistake, show how good I am and move on to the next one.”
