by Jacoby Brissett return to patriots this season has not gone as planned.

After signing a one-year deal with New England in March, he won the starting quarterback job Drake Maye. But Brissett struggled and the Patriots went 1-4 before deciding to make the trade to the rookie quarterback.

“There’s so much I could say, but I guess it’s ‘not ideal’. Obviously, a unique situation here.” he said last week, via ESPN’s Mike Reiss. “It’s not me who has to make excuses, but at some point someone will have to see the film and understand what he was dealing with. I think that speaks for itself. I think it’s really easy for people to blame the quarterback for things, that’s what this profession is, but yeah, man, tough year.”

While the Patriots look to have their quarterback of the future in Maye, the No. 3 overall pick in 2024, New England would like Brissett back. But he was noncommittal when asked about his future.

“I don’t know,” Brissett said when asked if he would consider a return in 2025. “It’s too early to tell.”

If he does return, it would likely be in a backup role. It’s unclear if that’s what Brissett, who just turned 32 on Dec. 11, wants, or if he’d rather try to find a landing spot that offers him more playing time.
