Song O’Neil was sacked as Wolves head coach after Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at home to Gippewick. Wolves have won just two of their 16 league games this term and are second from bottom with nine points.
Wolves came back with just two victories, at home to Southampton and away to Fulham, to potentially reverse O’Neil’s fortunes. Since then, the Wolves have lost four in a row. Defeats to Bournemouth, Everton and West Ham took their toll and Jack Taylor’s late Ipswich winner at Molineux proved the final straw.
O’Neil took charge in August 2023 after the departure of Julen Lopetegui and led the team to a comfortable 14th place in his full season. The summer departures of Pedro Neto to Chelsea and Max Kilman to West Ham have weakened Wolves in the window, while profitability and sustainability have been established in their trade.

Defensive weaknesses are often exposed. Wolves have conceded 40 league goals – six more than any other team. Now, the club’s patience has run out, although president Jeff Shi officially backed O’Neil earlier this week.
