Tottenham the manager Ange Postecoglou redoubled his criticism Timo Werner and says he doesn’t have time to “worry about people’s bruised egos” during a tough race for the team.
German national team member Werner was withdrawn at halftime Tottenham draw 1-1 at Rangers on Thursday night, with Postecoglou batting attacker performance as “unacceptable” after the Europa League match.
Postecoglou was then asked about his comments on Friday afternoon, when Spurs face Southampton in the Premier League this weekend, and the manager did not back down from his comments under pressure as he outlined what he wants from his team.

“It was not a criticism. That was an assessment,” Postecoglou said on Friday. “He is [Werner] international, he won the Champions League, he is a senior player. There is a level of application that you must rise to in order to raise a team. He didn’t get there.
“It’s just an assessment of his performance. In a really challenging night for us, which we knew was in her. It has to be better. We are in a fight here. I won’t go away worrying about people’s bruised egos. We are here to win.”
Tottenham have won one of their last eight games and travel to bottom side Southampton on Sunday before taking on Manchester United in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals in midweek.
Although several injuries to first-team players have highlighted a thin squad, Postecoglou’s side have struggled to replicate their high-intensity style on a consistent basis this season – as epitomized by a 4-0 win against champions Manchester City followed by defeats to Bournemouth and Chelsea.

Speaking more generally about his squad, Postecoglou said he wants players who are “ready for the challenge” and warned that anyone who does not meet the required standards will not have a future at the club.
“If there is someone in the dressing room who is fit and feels he needs something extra at the moment, he is probably not the right guy,” Postecoglou added.
“I’m not going to go around trying to get more out of people. If they are not able to give more now, it probably says something similar.
“The team is not where our season is. It’s not about Tim. It’s not about knocking someone down and blaming them. We have a limited number of players. It’s a big challenge. I want people who are ready for that challenge.”
