The Manchester city Defender Kyle Walker has called for more to be done to stop online abuse after receiving a “vile, racist and threatening” message.
Walker posted a screenshot of a racially insulting message he received on Instagram after Manchester City’s Champions League loss to Juventus on Wednesday.
“No one has ever taken the vile, racist and threatening abuse I received online during the night of the match,” wrote Walker on Instagram and X. “Instagram and the authorities need to stop this, for the sake of everything. Those who suffer this insult. It is never acceptable.”
The state quickly condemned the online abuse in the constitution. “Manchester City strongly condemns the racist abuse Kyle Walker was subjected to online following last night’s fixture,” he said.
“We refuse to tolerate discrimination of any kind, regardless of whether they are in stadiums or online. We will offer Kyle our full support after receiving the most appalling treatment.
Walker played the entire match in Turin but was unable to help Pep Guardiola’s team avoid a seventh defeat in their last 10 matches. “To our fans, as a team we are working to do better, to improve and to turn a corner together,” the England international added on his website.
The Premier League’s constitution read: “The Premier League condemns all forms of discrimination. Racial discrimination has no place in our game or anywhere in society. We encourage anyone who hears or sees abuse to report it so that action can be taken.
“In the Premier League and the club will favor Walker and Kyle” [Manchester City] take over online hate, the statement added. PA message pushing Instagram contacts in the comments.
