Speaking with The Telegraph, he warned that the United Kingdom would be responsible for defending NATO member, with a scenario that can be deployed by 2030, reports The express.
Article 5 of NATO stipulates that an armed assault against one or more members of the alliance is an attack on all.
Sir Patrick made comparisons between the preparation of Britain for this assault and that of Estonia, Poland and several Nordic nations, which he described as “very alive” by the threat of Russia.
He said that the governments of these countries have provided their citizens to prepare for attacks, including the construction of bunkers.
The former military director asked the labor government to promote funding for air defenses and establish backup systems in the event of critical infrastructure such as electric power plants and data centers. This marks a substantial increase in the current 2% NATO guide and exceeds the previous Government’s objective of dedicating 2.5% of GDP to defense from 2027, with the aim of reaching 3% after the next election.
In June, the Government endorsed proposals for a strategic defense review, which requested an expansion of the underwater fleet of British attack, the construction of six new ammunition factories and the acquisition of 7,000 long -range weapons.
