Boston is reportedly finalizing a trade to acquire star lefty Garrett Crochet from the White Sox in a deal that will send a whopping four prospects: catcher Kyle Teel, outfielder Braden Montgomery, infielder Chase Meidroth and pitcher Wikelman Gonzalez in Chicago. The deal is by far the most aggressive move of Craig Breslow’s tenure with the Red Sox and marks the opening salvo in what the club has promised will be an aggressive winter.
Crochet, 25, had a breakout season for the historically bad White Sox in 2024, posting a 3.58 ERA while striking out 209 batters in 146 innings over 32 starts. The former first-round pick quickly became one of the best starters in baseball after starting his career as a dominant reliever. He is under contract for two more years, but the Red Sox could seek an extension with him soon.
The return to Chicago includes Boston’s last two first-round picks in Teel, who is widely regarded as one of the best catching prospects in baseball, and Montgomery, a Texas A&M outfielder who went 12th overall in July but he has not yet made his professional debut due to injury. Meidroth has phenomenal on-base skills and reached Triple-A in 2024; Gonzalez was previously considered one of the organization’s top pitching prospects, but faced real struggles in 2024.
