Asking Eric: Family gathering ruined after relative posted unflattering photos of me on social media

Dear Eric: At a recent family meeting, images were taken and then published on social media. I had not seen them, but at that time I participated. I don’t want my pictures to post for personal reasons and cause mental distress to see them. I don’t think I can ask them to be taken away without causing a family break. I published a brief comment that people should ask before posting and I would do the same. The person saw her, so I hope they got them out. I think it may have been made for the wrong reasons, as this person published only those that were flattened. Now a wonderful memory of the occasion will ruin in my memories. Should people think before using photos of others on social media?

– Social dilemma

Dear Social: Short answer: Yes. There are many reasons why people may not want their photos to be published, it may not be an angle you like, maybe you want to preserve your privacy, you may not want anyone to know what will mean in your free time. It is always a good practice to ask before posting.

And it is not rude or indisputable to ask to take a photo to be removed or to be edited from a photo. Many social media platforms make it very easy to cut a photo or even add a little emoji to the face of someone who would prefer not to be in the photo. For example, many people do it when they publish photos of the family with children, for example.

It is easy to think of social media as a personal photo album, in fact, many social media companies want you to feel so. But a photo album is usually on the shelf and is only shown in a limited audience. Social networks, even with privacy configuration, are much more public. You can and have to ask what you need in this case.
