An important part of President Donald Trump President Donald Trump in the Federal Government has not been drawing the attention he deserves, that is, his efforts to destroy the will of anyone to serve government agencies, anyone with a sense of public service.
The effective government requires that officials working at agencies vigorously implemented the laws that our democratically elected officials, the laws we trust to solve society’s problems and improve our lives.
But Trump’s irrational hatred on these public servants was even before the election when he stated: “They are destroying this country. They are disturbed people, they are dishonest people. They will be responsible.”
And it’s not alone. More recently, the United States Republican Representative, Marjorie Taylor Greene, announced at a meeting of the Committee that “federal employees do not deserve their job. Federal employees do not deserve their payments.”
Once in office, Trump began the massive shots of 24,000 federal workers. Many of these shots were most likely illegal and have been temporarily suspended by the courts. But even if these traits are annulled, they will have their intended effect to demolish the morale of federal workers and create what Steve Lenkart, leader of the National Federation of Federal Employees, describes as a state of mood of “fear and anxiety”.
And don’t be wrong, trying to disappoint and depress federal workers is an explicit part of the republican game book. Russell Vought, Trump’s budget director, made it clear when, referring to federal workers, he said: “When they wake up in the morning, we want them not to want to go to work, because they are increasingly seen as villas. We want to put them in trauma.”
Republicans want to besiege federal workers so much that anyone with a sense of public service will think twice on working for the federal government.
Among the workers who want to traumatize, are those of the Consumer Financial Protection Office, whose work has returned more than $ 21 billion to American consumers since its establishment in 2010 and those of the Health and Safety Administration at work, who have saved a dear of 712,000 lives since 1971 and reduced the victims at almost two thirds. And those EPA employees who have worked to implement net air acts and their modifications, which studies have shown that they have saved millions of North -American lives and dollars in medical costs since 1970.
Instead of disgusting these people, we should be grateful. In fact, I don’t think it is an exaggeration to call people who save millions of lives and billions of dollars.
Why do Trump want to punish those who have done so much to promote public interest?
He says it is to destroy the “deep state:” A theory of conspiracy claiming that an unclean group of administrators is manipulating or directly directed by national politics. But it is to consolidate its own power. The massive traits and the dismantling of the agencies are melted from anyone who insists on following the term of the Congress of their agency instead of Trump’s whims. And it is also a form of extreme deregulation: deactivating those agencies that try to protect workers, consumers and the environment and the regulations of which reduce the benefits of billionaires and corporations that are the main funders of the Republican party.
The long -term effects of this vicious public service against public service are worrying. The loss of federal workers through early shots, resignations and retirement will paralyze these agencies’ ability to fulfill their mandates to promote public interest. And huge amounts of institutional knowledge will be lost forever. In addition, the hiring of young people who want to participate in public service will be much more difficult. Who wants a job where your potential head viles and will demolish you?
Bureaucracies are far from perfect. But all North -Americans benefit from a federal government personalized by many workers dedicated and talented who are motivated by a sense of public service, which are often ready to give up the highest payment jobs in the private sector to work for the government and try to make the world a better place.
We need to understand that an injury to those who respond to the call of public service is an injury to all of us. And we must vote outside those responsible for this cruel effort to demonize and besiege public workers.
