Bill Haney posted a video of his son Devin Haney working out, fending off repeated slow left tackles from the trainer in what appears to be preparation for a rematch with Ryan Garcia in 2025. Papa Haney said: “It’s no secret what time we’re in,” which is a cryptic remark about how they are hunkering down, preparing for another skirmish.
Honey’s kryptonite
The left hook Ryan (24-1, 20 KOs) used repeatedly to drop Heaney (31-0, 15 KOs) was kryptonite in their April 20 clash at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Bill doesn’t say if Devin will do the tuning before facing Kingry again, but it would make sense.
Hannay, 26, has been out of the ring for seven months and can’t afford to lose all the money he could make in a warm-up fight before facing Ryan again.
He needs to get back into action, win over the fans again and show he’s not mentally broken after what he went through in his 12-round loss to Kingry by majority of three knockdowns in 12 rounds.
More importantly, Haney must stay sharp to have the best shot at avenging his loss. Garcia takes on tough Japanese fighter Rukia Anpo on December 30th, and that matchup will help him prepare for his second fight with Devin.
Ryan was pounding Honey’s backside all over the ring last April and made it look so easy. The sad thing was that Devin made zero adjustments to take the left hook away from Ryan, and it wouldn’t have been hard to do.
Neutralization of the left hip
- Stop holding on: Ryan caught Devin with a left hook as he tried to clinch and never stopped doing this. He didn’t have to look for Hanei because he was there every time. This area cost Hanni the fight.
- Hold your right hand up: Haney could have blocked left balls from Ryan if he had been alert, but he didn’t. He was messy.
- Stay outside. If Devin is out, Ryan won’t be able to get his “bread and butter” shot and will be eating jabs all night.
