Two children among 15 dead as fire engulfs six-storey hotel in India



Massive Fire has gripped the sixth-storey hotel in Indian state West BengalKilling at least 15 people on Tuesday evening, the police said.

Blaze started about 19:30 at Hotel Riture, located on Madanmohan Street in Kolkatathe burrabazar area. It took hours to fire flames, and the fire was finally brought under control 1 am local time.

Police said most victims died of suffocation. Several people were trapped within the hotel because the smoke filled the stairs and hallways.

While smoke spreads through the building, some guests pulled to the roof, while others covered the windows heads, toward Indian express. Firefighters used hydraulic life ladders, and the speakers were used to calm those trapped inside.

One man died trying to escape with jumping out of the building.

“Sit down (Special Investigation Team) was formed to check the cause of the fire and check the security measures that were in force,” said Kolkuta Police Commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma.

He added, “The investigation will also look at the difficulties facing guests while evacuating from the building.”

Coppy Cops quoted as saying Hindustan: “There were 88 guests in 42 rooms at the moment of the incident. The boy, girl and women are among the dead. The cause of the fire will only be determined. Our forensic team will review the location, which is codoned.”

Said State Minister Sujit Bose PTI On Wednesday: “There were 15 deaths in the last night. Eight deceased was identified.” Most victims were visitors from other countries, officials said.

Photos and videos from the scene showed thick showers of smoke rising as the firefighters ran in order to save those trapped inside.

“There were 14 bodies extracted and several people were saved,” Mr. Verma said.

In X: “State President of the BJP for Western Bengal, Sukanta, wrote to the public administration to save them immediately, ensure their safety and stricter monitoring of fire protection measures to prevent such tragic incidents in the future. “

The man was identified as Sanjoy Paswan, who fell as he tried to escape the fire, was named dead upon arrival at the hospital for the College Faculty of Medicine, where several other injured victims.
