Billie Eilish claimed to be a controversial fashion line Brandy Melville contributed to the beginning of her “body problems”.
The 22-year-old singer spoke candidly about growing up with the brand, which famously sells all of its closures in one size, during a cover interview with Complex published on Thursday (December 5). She explained that she loved Brandy Melville so much as a child that she developed a negative view of her appearance as a result.
“I never wore pants or shorts when I was little,” she explained, noting that she loved wearing skirts and big dresses growing up. “But when I was about 11, I became obsessed with this brand called Brandy Melville. And they only sold clothes in one size. I was chubbier and I was obsessed with this outfit, but I would buy a shirt and it wouldn’t fit. That’s when my body problems started.”
“I was about 10 or 11 years old. “I had breasts at the age of nine and I developed really early,” Eilish continued. “I wasn’t slim. Also, I was in ballet, and it’s this whole world of body issues.”
The “Birds of a Feather” singer noted that she started wearing “baggy clothes” at this point in her childhood. Although this was her “style” at the time, she also admitted to wearing baggier clothes due to her struggle with body image.

“It was how I could feel comfortable in my body and not feel bound by what my body looked like. I didn’t want my body to be part of my clothes,” she continued. “I wanted my clothes to be my clothes, and my body happens to be in them.”
Eilish explained that when she started to achieve more success in her career around the age of 16, she became known for wearing “just baggy clothes” and not looking “like a girl”. While she was making her album for 2021 Happier than evershe decided to show her fans that she is much more than that “one thing” as people have defined her.
“I had to completely turn everything around and be this girl for a moment and have these pink nails, blonde hair, skirts, dresses, buckles, bras and underwear,” Eilish said. “I really only did it to prove a point. I was just like, “Fuck you guys. I can do whatever I want.”

Since 2009, Brandy Melville has been stocking up on one-off clothing for young girls with an inventory that includes “baby tees,” low-rise denim, and micro shorts. The brand rose to prominence in the 2010s, as social media stars were often seen wearing Brandy Melville clothing on Instagram.
The company has not only been criticized for its one-size-fits-all clothing, but has also faced accusations of cultivating a toxic workplace. In an HBO documentary Brandy Helville: The cult of fast fashionwhich came out in April, former employees accused members of Brandy Melville’s senior management of racism, anti-Semitic behavior and sexual exploitation.
The Bad Guy singer has previously spoken about her struggle with body image. I’m talking to Vogue 2023 Eilish opened up about her hypermobility diagnosis and how it caused him to feel anger towards his body.
According to Cleveland Clinicjoint hypermobility syndrome is a connective tissue disorder that causes pain due to highly flexible joints.
“Going through my teenage years hating myself and all that stupid shit, a lot of it came from my anger at my body, and how angry I was at how much pain it caused me and how much I lost because of the things that happened to her,” she admitted. is Eilish.
