March Maddening? Synchronization of transfer portal opening may be difficult for coaches still in the tournament

By Doug Feinberg AP Writer Writer

Birmingham, Ala. (AP) – Coaches who still play in the NCAA tournament have to divide their time between preparing their teams for Sweet 16 and talk with possible transfers that have entered the portal.

Such is life in university basketball.

Dawn Story is one of those coaches and said it is a huge challenge.

“I think the calendar is loaded. It really plays your ability to compartmentalize,” said South Carolina coach on Thursday. “If it is not, I mean, most coaches are, but if you are not really good, it may be that you can leave you out. But for us, the main one, the most important thing is to try to win another national championship.”

The portal opened on Tuesday and 595 women’s basketball players entered the first 24 hours, according to NCAA. This is 2 1/2 times more than the 233 players who entered the same term last year. There were 757 men’s basketball players in the portal in the initial 24 hours of this year, which were also more than double last season.

This is the first year that the portal opened this week. Last year, it opened one day after the NCAA tournament selection program.

On Friday morning there were more than 1,000 women’s basketball players on the portal. A name that does not yet in the portal yet, but will soon enter the State Guard of Florida, Ta’niya Laton, who directed all the players of the division and by scoring this season. Its representatives of Kluth Sports Group confirmed to The Associated Press that he was exploring their options to transfer them. ESPN first reported the latson’s decision.

The portal has exploited in recent years, and Nul Money has become a main reason for players to be transferred.

“Many children are leaving for this, but at the same time I feel that you have to follow your heart instead of money,” said the Guard Te-Hina Paopao, who landed in South Carolina as a transfer last year from Oregon. “You can only have fun -you do with the game and create those relationships I created and we can only fall in love with the game and continue to play the game you like.”

Paopao is not alone in his feelings.

Sedona Prince, who moved twice to his career, starting in Texas before going to Oregon and now TCU, feels that players should not be only after getting the nile money.

“I would say in this new age, I mean, before (revenue) shares and things, don’t go for money,” Prince said. “Only fail. I know many kids try to pay, as they should be. That’s how it should be. That’s how it should always be. But being very smart.”

Maryland striker Sylor Poffenbarger began his career in Uconn before moving to Arkansas and then to Terrapins. He knows too well on how the transfer portal works.

“When I entered the portal for the second time, I had to choose the things that were important to me,” he said. “It’s a bit crazy. It’s agitated. Everyone launches numbers, everyone throws this, everyone throws this. You just have to keep it faithful and … choose a school that aligns with your morale because at the end of the day, you are you and the school does not change for you when you enter them.”

While students enter the portal when their season ends, the current calendar hinders 10% of the programs they still play.

At present, one problem is that there is no better time for the portal to open.

The Student Athletics Advisory Committee agreed to reduce the duration of the portal from 45 days to 30, which allowed to change the calendar to date this year. Some coaches wanted a date closely at the latest on May 1 due to final exams and summer school enrollment so that players could be eligible for their new school.

With the window of 30 days and the deadline of May 1, the portal had to open before the end of the final Four.

So Staley and the other Sweet 16 coaches must have a multiple task even more than usual.

If the players do not understand that Story may not have all the time to recruit them right now because the Gamecoks try to win a championship, they may not be appropriate for the program.

Staley said he would call a few players after ending his media obligations on Thursday.

“You still have to do it. Yes, I will call someone when you leave here. A few people. Just because you have to know them:” Hey, we are thinking of you, “he said.” We have this career we try (finish), but it is a priority for us. “

UCLA coach Cori Close has noticed another problem with the portal’s opening calendar: schools are now faster to shoot and hire coaches before the portal opens so that they do not stay behind.

“I think we have been precipitating the hires to put the people in their place in front of the portal, which has distractions of their current teams,” he said. “I will defend the low season that we make another change.

“I do not think it is of the best interest in our game and the best interests of our children and the best interests of our coaches to have a distraction in the most magnified time.”
