An out-of-service police officer fired and killed a man carrying a knife inside a Chick-Fil-A in Boston Copley Square on Saturday evening, according to authorities during a press conference.
At around 17.27, two individuals ran inside the restaurant at 569 Boylston St. And they were persecuted by a man with a knife, according to Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox.
The man tried to stab the two individuals and an out -of -service police officer was identified and told the man to leave the weapon, but he did not, said Cox.
The officer shot and struck the man who later declared dead in a nearby hospital, said Cox.
“This is a rather tragic incident,” Cox said. “Our condolences goes to the person who was killed tonight. We are proud of our officers who activate themselves, whether service or out of service, to try to save lives. ”
Cox said the officer out of service was also taken to the hospital, but without injuries reported, Cox said.
Suffolk district prosecutor Kevin Hayden and Mayor Michelle Wu joined the police station in the Press conference Saturday evening.
Hayden said that the murder unit of his office “will direct and control” the investigation. He said that many witnesses are cooperating with the investigation and that a large number of video tests were being reviewed.
There are other individuals “who were here who know something, who witnessed something, which may have been involved, and ask them to move forward,” he said.
“We need the help of everyone who knows something about what has happened here if we want to reach the bottom, if we are going to the truth and if we are going to understand what happened in this chaotic situation,” said Hayden.
Wu and Hayden shared their condolences for the murdered man’s family.
“I am also thinking of all the people who have had an impact here on one of the most busy parts of the city with this tragedy,” Wu said.
He said there are trauma support services available for people affected by the incident.
Although much information was not shared at the press conference on the individuals involved in the incident, Hayden said “they were young for what we know.”
