Authorities in the Dominican Republic announced Friday that they have seized nearly 9.5 tons of cocaine, the largest drug seizure in the country’s history.
Drugs worth $250 million were found in a shipment of bananas that arrived at the capital’s port of Caucedo Saint Dominicthe most important seaport in the country. The shipment was sent from Guatemala and was destined for Belgiumsaid Carlos Devers, a spokesman for the Dominican Republic’s Drug Enforcement Agency.
Ten suspects have been detained, he said at the press conference.
Authorities have seized nearly 47 tons of drugs so far this year.
The second largest seizure on record was in 2006, when officials found more than 5,680 pounds (2,580 kilograms) in the port of Caucedo.
The Dominican Republic has long been considered a major transit point for drugs.
