David Lynchthe celebrated director of avant-garde films such as Eraserhead, Mulholland Drive and Elephant Man and a very popular TV show Twin Peakshe died at the age of 78.
His family announced his death in Facebook post on Thursday (January 16)writing, “There is a great hole in the world now that he is no longer with us. But, as he would say, ‘Keep it on the donut, not the hole.'”
Lynch developed a unique style known for disturbing visuals, stream-of-consciousness storytelling and kitsch soundtracks. As a director, he walked a tightrope between his artistic sensibility and inexplicable popularity among more conventional film audiences, with The New Yorker film critic Pauline Kael labeled him “the first populist surrealist”.
In his frequent collaboration with Hollywood luminaries such as Laura Dern, Kyle MacLachlan, Sheryl Lee, Naomi Watts, Jack Nance and Harry Dean Stanton, the director left behind an oeuvre that can rival the most successful authors of the medium.

David Lynch, director of Twin Peaks and The Elephant Man, has died at 78
I’m talking to Sight & Sound magazine last year, Lynch revealed that he had been diagnosed with emphysema due to smoking throughout his life and said he couldn’t “go out” for fear of Covid.
“I got emphysema from smoking for so long and I’m so housebound whether I like it or not. It would be really bad if I got sick, even with a cold,” he said, revealing that he “can only walk a short distance before” “coming out of oxygen“.
