The Peruvian president, Dina Boluarte, appeared before prosecutors to insist that her two-week absence from plastic surgery on her nose was medical, not cosmetic.
Boluarte, 62, has not been appointed caretaker president for the period of his absence in July 2023 and has been accused of abandoning his post.
He appeared before prosecutors for a four-hour hearing on Monday, and left without speaking to reporters waiting outside.
Some lawmakers have asked Boluarte to be removed from office. He had not delegated his public powers to Congress, according to the laws.
But his team said he barely lived his duties while in Lima recovering from rhinoplasty at a clinic for “breathing problems.”
Boluarte has been involved in controversy for months.
The accusers also accuse receiving gifts in the form of Rolex watches and the ornaments and the inquiry itself upon it with the deaths of more than 50 insurgents in the crackdown on demonstrations against his presidency in 2022. He denied any wrongdoing.
Boluarte took office in December of that year, when President Pedro Castello resigned after he was accused and imprisoned for trying to dissolve Congress.
He had been its president.
Boluarte does not have his own party in Congress and disapproves by an almost 95% rating. His term ends in July 2016.
Peru suffers from chronic instability and has had six presidents in the past eight years.
