Brian Flores interested in Patriots coaching job

Speaking to reporters in Minnesota on Tuesday, Flores spoke at length about returning to being a head coach. The Vikings defensive coordinator said he will welcome the opportunity to interview with other teams and said that Work of the patriots he is interested

However, he noted, this is not up to him.

“We’re talking about going home,” Flores said. “Where it all started, so I think this is a place that has a special place in my, when I talk about my football journey, this is where it was called. I would say yes. But at the same time, it doesn’t depend on me whether or not they would want to talk to me or something like that. That’s my thought on that.”

The Patriots interviewed two candidates in person on Tuesday: Byron Leftwich i Pep Hamilton. They have also made a request to interview Ben Johnson. A source also told MassLive the Patriots plans to interview Mike Vrabel this week

Flores entered the NFL with the Patriots in 2008 as a special teams assistant. He became an offensive assistant and special teams coach in 2010 before moving to the defensive side of the ball.

Bill Belichick promoted Flores to safeties coach in 2012. In 2016, he moved to linebackers coach. Although never given the title of defensive coordinator, Flores was the Patriots’ go-to defensive player during the 2019 season. That group led the Patriots to a 13-3 victory over the Los Angeles Rams in the Super Bowl XXXVI.

This led to Flores being hired as the head coach of the Miami Dolphins in 2020. In three years, Flores’ team compiled a 24-25 record. He was fired in 2022. That year, he filed a class-action lawsuit against the NFL, the New York Giants, Denver Broncos and Dolphins, alleging racial discrimination.

In the suit, Flores revealed that he received a text message from Belichick congratulating him on getting the Giants head coaching job. However, Belichick wanted to send a text message to Brian Daboll.

After that, Flores worked in Pittsburgh as the Steelers’ linebackers coach. He joined the Vikings organization as defensive coordinator in 2023. This season, Minnesota finished with the fifth-best scoring defense in the NFL.

With the Vikings playing in the wild-card round next Monday, teams will be able to interview Flores virtually on Thursday, Jan. 16.

“These head coaching requests are an honor, that’s for sure,” Flores said. “Definitely don’t take it lightly. I look forward to having those conversations, talking to people about my football journey, my leadership journey.”
