Teofimo Lopez seeks top-tier buyout, eyes free agency

Teofimo Lopez posted on X today, asking his Top Rank promoters what his “redemption” the number is so he can get out of the rest of his contract.

Why is this sudden burst of energy from Lopez asking his promoters for a buyout number? He could see free agent Devin Haney fight at BLK Prime on March 25 and probably make some good money. Theo might want to get into acting.

Teofimo’s Top Rank Equity?

As a free agent, Lopez could be snapped up at Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom, or he could choose to follow Hani’s strategy to stay in that capacity.

WBO light heavyweight champion Teofimo (21-1-1, 13 KOs) seems to believe he’ll get bigger fights once he leaves Top Rank, but it’s questionable whether that will happen. Theo’s loss to George Cambosos Jr. and controversial wins over Jamaine Ortiz and Sandor Martin showed that he is a limited fighter.

How does Lopez not know his redemption number? His manager should be able to give him this information. Top Rank has done men’s work with Teofim throughout his career. It’s not their fault he’s looked so bad since his one big career win against Vasily Lomachenko in 2020.

Teofimo is expected to fight former IBF light heavyweight champion Subriel Matias on March 15 in a non-PPV event on ESPN. There’s a good chance Lopez loses that fight, as he looked terrible against Jamaine, Sandor and Steve Claggett.
