An Indian a village named after the president Jimmy Carter pays tribute to the late commander-in-chief on the eve of his funeral at the Washington National Cathedral on January 9.
Carter died on Sunday at the age of 100. He served one term in The White Housebetween 1977 and 1981.
Carterpuri — “Village of Carter” — is located about 20 miles out Delhi. When Carter’s mother, Lillian, lived and worked there as a nurse for a brief period in the 1960s, it was called Daulatpur Nasirabad.
“The villagers dressed his wife in traditional clothes… He (Carter) also tried hookah,” said resident Moti Ram, reports Reutersrecalling the time Carter and his wife Rosalynn visited the village.
Preparations began several months before the visit on January 3, 1978, villagers told news agency ANI. The village was decorated, and welcome programs were held in the central square.
After the visit, the residents decided to change the name of the village in honor of the Carters. After hearing of Carter’s death, they paid tribute to the late president by placing a wreath on his framed picture and laying flowers in front of it, Reuters reported, citing local media.
Former Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, the US ambassador to India, pointed out the village in a post on X.
“As president, he visited India in 1978 and began building a new foundation for US-India relations that helped pave the way for the deep and consequential friendship we now enjoy,” he wrote. “In Haryana, near Delhi, there is a town called Carterpuri which is a testament to the great respect he had here in India.”
Garcetti shared several pictures from the visit, including one of Rosalynn in traditional dress.
Among the highlights of the village is a letter sent by Carter thanking residents for making the visit “successful and so personally satisfying,” Reuters reported.
