Springfield School Committee extends controversial camera pact with police for 45 days

SPRINGFIELD – The School Committee extended an expiring agreement that gives the police department access to live footage from school cameras in the event of an emergency through the end of February.

Thursday’s 7-0 vote extended the memorandum of understanding with the police department for another 45 days to buy the School Committee additional time to renew the contentious policy, School Committee Vice Chairwoman LaTonia Monroe Naylor said.

The School Committee held public meetings in November and December to hear input from students, parents and community members about the policy and their concerns. Members are now working with the school’s attorneys to update the pact, he said.
