Springfield proposing temporary extension in residency requirement

SPRINGFIELD — The City Council has taken the first step in giving new employees an extra year to move to the city in hopes of saving the jobs of a few employees who have not found a place to live and are about to fulfill the term of residence.

The proposal will now move to the subcommittee for further discussion, with a tentative final vote expected at the next meeting on January 6.

New employees currently have one year to relocate to Springfield after the hire date. The proposal is to extend it to two years to give them more time to find a home in a tight housing market.
