An 11 -year -old cyclist died after his electric bike came to a tree Charlton Thursday afternoon.
Charlton Firefighters went to 34 Jennings Drive around 3:50 pm Thursday for a bike accident involved, wrote the department Facebook. It was “clear” that the bicycle had touched a tree and it is not believed that there were other vehicles involved, said fire chief Rob Barton in an email.
The first ones who responded requested a medical helicopter in the area given the seriousness of the child’s injuries, said the department. But Umass Memorial Lifeflight said he could not fly due to weather conditions: the region was affected by heavy rains and floods on Thursday.
A hospital land transport unit encountered an ambulance from Charlton to Auburn and teams “worked together to continue to deliver the highest level of attention during transport to Worcester,” said Fire Corps.
“Please keep the child and family in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time,” the post read.
The child declared himself dead at the hospital.
The investigation is still ongoing by the Charlton Police Department, state police detectives assigned to the Worcester district district district prosecutor’s office and the Massachusetts Central of the Law Council.
