Brand founder Dov Charney was expelled in 2014 in the midst of job harassment allegations
Netflix’s latest documentary, Trainwreck: The Cult of American Apparel, makes a deep immersion in the alleged toxic work environment in the clothing brand once popular, American Aparel.
The film, which premiered at the streaming service on Tuesday (July 1), traces the rapid rise and dramatic fall of the renowned fashion label.
American Apparel, who gained immense popularity in the mid -2000’s, faced a major scandal in 2014 when his CEO and founder, Dov Charney, was rejected in the midst of his harassment allegations.
Despite these allegations, Charney is still a prominent figure in the fashion industry, operating Los Angeles Clothing since 2016. The employer has constantly denied all charges against him and has never been convicted or responsible for any crime.
Now, Charney’s former employees are presenting to share their experiences working under the controversial founder of the brand, including his “obsession” for a better selling book, reports the mirror that.
Former EJ EJ says that Charney’s fascination with the 48 laws of power, a non-fiction book written by his friend Robert Greene.
“Before I met Dov, I had heard that she was obsessed with this book,” she shared. When he finally read the book that his ex-Boss worshiped, he read Law 27 loudly.
“Give your new rituals to perform, ask them to make sacrifices on your behalf,” Greene writes.

This particular rule deeply resonated with EJ, who explained that Charney had embodied this law “perfectly”.

Charney, meanwhile, has openly expressed his admiration for the book, telling the Times his favorite chapter is Law 28 – “Enter Action with Boldness”.
In the documentary, EJ will detail how fear prevented her from leaving her job, despite being more and more dissatisfied with the company’s culture.
Speaking NetflixEj explained how Charney had warned that he would be on the blacklist if he left the brand.
