Fort Lauderdale, FLA. (AP) – After Brad Marchand scored the winning goal in match 2 of the Stanley Cup final, he and his Florida Panthers teammate, Sam Bennett, were asked how they kept their bodies for another long and intense game against Edmonton’s Oilers.
“I think (Marchand) took a bubble … I think it was Oreo today,” Bennett said, referring to a viral moment during the Eastern Conference finals when Marchand joked that he enjoyed a chocolate cookie mass of the Dairia de la Queen’s drop between periods, which was later revealed as a tablespoon of honey.
“Beautiful plug,” Marchand responded with a laugh. “I like this.”
Of course, they joked, but there was a point in the double Friday night game that Marchand spent time between periods of pedaling on an exercise bicycle to stay loose, while the players on both teams stirred the tired bodies and off the ice for hours.
The first two games of the Stanley Cup final have gone to extension, only the sixth time in the history of the NHL that took place and first since 2014. Party 1 continued to the goal of Leon Draisaitl 19:29 in the additional period. Marchand finished the game 2 with a goal of 8:07 in the second extension.
With the series tied by 1-1, both teams will start on a cross-content trip from Canada to Florida, enjoying an additional break between the games to recover after an intense start of their series of championships. Game 3 is Monday night in Sunrise, Florida.
“Obviously, a long game, far behind and forward,” said Florida’s defender, Seth Jones, who directed the panthers in ice times at 34 minutes, 35 seconds on Friday.
Jones, who is promoting a team of 25:45 ice in the post -season ice, played more than 30 minutes in the first two games of the series. He scored the first period on Friday, the fourth goal of the post -season, and helped Dmitry Kulikov’s goal in the second.
“We came here to split us and we got it,” Jones added, “and he will only recover us now.”
Panthers coach Paul Maurice said that he returns to Florida with the series linked, instead of lowering 0-2, makes a minor mental difference, but one of his team’s strengths is his tunnel vision approach.
“It is mathematically significant,” said Maurice. “I would like to think that today we would drag here, this morning, if we had lost that party having had the leadership for so long. But I think we are very good to cut it.
“It’s the same morning this morning in the meal room, since it was two days ago (after the loss of match 1). It’s the next day. We understand how to leave our days, good and bad, in the past and handle the day we have right now.”
The Oilers advance to the series with an equally short memory after losing the possibilities of match 2.
Corey Perry, whose goal is 17.8 seconds in the third period forced the extraordinary hours, said that the nature of the series had to be expected from the two teams, but there is nothing to hang on “what-fires”.
“What will you do?” Said Perry. “Now you won’t do anything to you. Bring to the plane tomorrow and rest and be ready for game 3.”
Few players have spent more time in the gel of the series that Connor McDavid. Edmonton’s star played 31:12 in match 1 and just over 35 minutes in game 2, more than anyone else in the game. It is almost 10 minutes more than their average season of 24:22.
McDavid’s impact was certainly felt on Friday. He had three assists, including one in which he was in the Florida penalty to establish Draisaitl’s Power Play’s goal in the first.
Draisaitl said after the game, there is only one player in the world who can make such a prominent game, but he emphasized the importance of using the two days of rest to emphasize.
“At this time of year, you must move on,” he said, “there is no time thinking -too long. Obviously, Pica right now, but we must move on.”
