James E. Young, a distinguished teacher emeritus from the English studies and the Middle East and founding director of Holocaust Institute, Genocide and Memory Studies At the University of Massachusetts Amherst, he has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Young was one of the nearly 250 members elected by 2025. An induction ceremony will take place on October 11 in Cambridge.
Young, the areas of teaching and research of which include narrative theory, cultural memory studies, Holocaust studies and visual culture, has taught in Umass Amherst since 1988. He also taught at the University of New York 1984-88 as a professor of Dorot in English and Hebrew Studies, at Bryn Mawr University and as a visiting professor at the University of Washington, At Harvard University and Princeton.
In 1997, Young was appointed by the Senate of Berlin for the five members of Findungskommish for the National Memorial of Germany to Jews killed in Europe, which was completed and dedicated in May 2005. He has also consulted with the Argentine government in his memorial for the Desparacidos, as well as with numerous city agencies in his memorades and museums. More recently, it was designated by the Lower Manhattan Development Corp in the jury for the design competition “National 9/11 Memorial”, won by Michael Arad and Peter Walker in 2004 and opened on September 11, 2011.
