Holyoke – After more than 20 years, the AMHERST girls field team finally recaptured the Massachusetts West Crown, and they won the difficult path.
The hurricanes gathered a complete effort to win their first western mass title in 21 years, ending with 136.5 points with the 115 of Northampton.
“We have based on some high quality athletes with a really fantastic coach … It has only been a team effort,” said Christopher Gould, Amherst coach. “I am so proud of everyone, from top to bottom from how they could meet in a rainy night. It’s hard to do the right things on a night like this.”
The team was without a few key athletes, including the star Moriah Luetjen, but this only seemed to motivate the hurricanes more.
“It was hard, but everyone met and we assured that we put the best foot on the track anyway,” Gould said. “So I am very happy to be able to win -for her.”
Senior Elizabeth Sawicki directed the victories in both 400 and 100 meters obstacles, promoting the mental challenge of the longest race with its resistance to signature, which was through the country in the fall.
“400 obstacles is always a hard mental game for me, just trying to prepare it, not trying to think about it before the race,” Sawicki said. “But just try to solve my mind before I climb to the starting line and try to do the best I can.”
Sawicki has seen the rise of first -hand Amherst. As a freshman, the team finished second, but struggled to replicate this momentum in the following years. So far.
Northampton, the four times champions defending, directed much of the night, putting Amherst under constant pressure as the encounter progressed.
But even when the gap was reduced and the events were over, the hurricanes refused to fold.

Elizabeth Sawicki, a senior of Amherst Track & Field, led Hurricanes to his first regional championship in 21 years at the Division and Division and Massachusetts championships in 2025.Meadow Barrow
“I think it really shows how this team joins and gets into work when it has to be done,” Sawicki said. “We had some people who did not show up today or could not come to enter the people, went up to the plate and only did the best they could.”
Northampton does not go silent
Although his reign as a champion was over, Northampton showed an incredible resolution, pushing Amherst at each step of the road and ending with only 21.5 points back.
)[Northampton] I again, “Gould said.” I was very struck by the proximity that they were all the time. “”
The Blue Devils had several first three finishes throughout the day, with Mairead O’Neil, in second place in both the mile and the two miles, and the heavy relay performances that maintained the pressure on Amherst.
Guzman and Chicopee Comp Shine
Few individuals shone brighter than Sophia Guzman from Chicopee. The Sprinter went through the 100 meters in 12.41 and added another victory to 200 with a time of 25.5.
His teammate, Alexandra Sawicki, also gave a better 26.08 staff in 200 for second place.
Chicopee Comp’s 4×100 relay team first ended at 51.63, giving a strong show that helped them place the third general with 74 points.
