An 18 -year -old man was arrested on Monday afternoon after police said he struck an officer with a moped.
Dorchester’s Kwest Howard faces a criminal charge of criminal charges relative to the incident at 16:38 on Monday in the city center city, according to Boston Police. a statement.
Officers who made traffic near Washington Street saw the Howard’s moped the wrong direction. The moped stopped around 367 Washington St., at which time police approached to start a traffic stop, the statement was read.
Howard is accused of suddenly accelerating the bicycle as police approached, and then turn left on Franklin Street in the direction of one of the officers. The officer tried to indicate howard to stop, but was hit by the bicycle, according to the statement. The impact launched the officer and caused the bicycle to crash on a stick, scattering remains on Franklin Street.
After the collision, according to police, Howard fled on foot, but was detained with the help of a viewer.
“During his arrest, Howard actively resisted attempts to be in prison, creating a disturbance in the area,” police wrote. “When Howard’s behavior began to attract a crowd, he made threats to shoot officers.”
Howard is accused of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, resisting arrest, threatening to commit a crime and disorderly behaviors. He also received several quotations for violations of criminal and civilian motor vehicles, including the lack of police stop, the reckless operation of a motor vehicle and the operation of an unregistered motor vehicle.
The officer hit by the moped was not injured.
Boston police say they continue their efforts to “address the unsafe and illegal functioning of mopeds and scooters in the center area.”
