Pope Leo XIV made the story converted the first north -American to ascend to leadership of the Catholic Church, but is now facing important decisions, including its choice of residence.

In a recent conversation with Vatican News, Leo stated that a “bishop is not supposed to be a prince sitting in his kingdom, but was authentic to be humble, to be close to the people who are useful, to walk with them and suffer with them.”
When Benedict XVI succeeded, Francis rejected the traditional papal apartment. He said he was too insulating and opted for the 201 Vatican Santa Marta House, where the new popes usually remain after a conclave.
He also expressed his preference for community life. “People fall into fall, and I can’t live without people,” Francis stated in a 2014 interview with Jesuit magazines. Francis also compared the apartment to “a funnel upside down” and said it was “spacious but not luxurious”.
The area, usually sealed after the death of Pope Francis, was officially reopened in the presence of Leo on noon on May 11, after Regina Caeli’s prayer.
The apartment remained out of limits, but the new pope recited the prayer of the loggia of the Basilica of San Pedro, diverting from the tradition of handing it from the window of the upper floor of the apostolic palace, a practice followed by all the Pages since 1958.
Before Pope Leo XIV can install, reforms are needed. The apartment has not seen important updates since 2005, after the passage of John Paul II.
The workers spent three months modernizing obsolete electrical systems (still 125 volts), reviewing the plumbing, updating air conditioning and kitchen, and especially building a library to accommodate Joseph Ratzinger’s 20,000 flight collection.
At the moment, the new pope has returned to his residence before The Dicastery for the bishops, located in the Palace of the Holy Office.
