Celtics do not always have to trust their Duo All-Star to produce, and that’s exactly what happened their game 1 earns on magic Sunday at TD Garden.
The C flexed their greatest strength, their deep, talented and unpredictable list, to cross a 1-0 series of the first round series against magic. Derrick White scored 30 points, shooting 10-18 of the field, while Jrue Holiday increased his intensity in the third quarter. And I can’t forget the sixth man of the NBA of the Frontrunner Year, Payton PritchardPutting 19 points on the bench in a flash.
“It just means we have a million different ways to win,” White said. “Many different things that we could launch in teams and only a lot of faith and confidence in all the people who check the game. We have many different weapons, many different people who do many different things. So whatever the game does, we can do this adjustment.”
The Celtics threw many looks at magic throughout the night, frustrating the young squad. C coach Joe Mazzulla warned that he did not look closely at the distribution of minutes because they use the strength of their entire list now that the playoffs are. This kept the magic out of balance, as the visitors won only 37 points in the second half.
That is why unpredictability also causes C to be so dangerous: they can mix their alignments based on coincidences. And they can always trust someone who increases. While the magic impressed to score 31 points in the second quarter, then they could not generate consistent offenses. So come game 2 of the series, established for 7 pm Wednesday in the garden, could be white, brown, tatum, holidays or anyone else who has the big night of punctuation to boost the Celtics.
All of this is part of the equation for the defending camps. Magic Postgame talked about how they did not expect White and Pritchard to come out as they did on Sunday. “It comes to boys just understand that everyone is a weapon, everyone has the opportunity to affect the game,” said Mazzulla. “I think Jaylen and Jayson lead so many different ways, and one of the ways is to empower everyone around him. I think Derrick had 10 points on Jaylen and Jayson’s screens, and that’s what it is.”
