Asking Eric: How do I address inappropriate work attire with HR?



Dear Eric: A woman who works for me dresses in a provocative manner. We work in a formal professional environment. She was wearing a black cord dress with neckline on a Monday and got rid of me: “Boy, you are dressed for a Monday!” His response was that he had an appointment that night.

I have complaints from co -workers that their meat neighborhood dresses are distracted and unprofessional. I contacted RRHH and his response was for me to handle – I know you do not intend to comment on appearances and this is a sensitive topic. Help!

Dear Dress: Ask for clarification from your Human Resource Department about what they mean when they say you should handle it. How is manipulation? Is there a clothing code you can cite? And most importantly, participating with your co -worker about your dress, could you create responsibility problems for you or the company?

Ultimately, unless your company has an applicable policy that RRHH can indicate, and constantly apply, you would make the best to focus your comments on your work performance. If other co -workers have a problem with their style of dressing, direct them to talk to RRHH. Your co -workers may feel that their style of dress creates a hostile work environment. HR needs this feedback to help create or clarify applicable policies that keep all safe.

Remember that workplace standards should be applied equally to all employees. Document any guidance you receive from RRHH before taking steps to protect yourself and your employee.
