Fort Myers, FLA. – With only five days before the regular season’s workshop, Kristian Campbell is still the striker to be the Red sox“Opening day, second base.
The young man, 22, will lead Boston in his Pomelo League game against Rays on Saturday at Port Charlotte.
David Hamilton It is still an opening day starting the second base option if the Red Sox determine in the coming days that Campbell takes more development time Triple-a world.
Romy gonzalez (oblique inflammation) hopes to be ready for the opening day. And so the Red Sox could also use a peloton in the second base with Gonzalez (right hand heartbeat) and Hamilton (left hand mixer) if Campbell begins in Triple A.
Marcelo Mayer is still a Long -shot candidate for the second base.
If Campbell, a beat on the right, makes the team, could also play the left field with Gonzalez in the second base on the days that Cora wants to stack a lot of hitters on the right against an initial launcher on the left hand.
Campbell passed only 7 by 42 (.167) with two doubles in spring training. But the Red Sox are not worried about their statistics. They think he has done a better job by controlling the beaters as the Aranja League action has advanced.
Campbell is prepared defensively in the second base? His defense has been behind his offense to Pro Ball so far. Baseball America, occupied by Campbell no. 4 to his List of Top 100Classify its 50 years (average of the major league) and its arm 50.
Red Sox Infield instructor Jose Flores was Worcester’s technical staff last year. But he saw that Campbell only played two games in the second base after promoting the first season of Top Prospect at Woosox on August 20. Campbell spent more time in the short (14 games, 11 games) in Worcester, while also started in two games in the central field.
“Obviously, we did not have the opportunity to work hard in the second base last year,” Flores told Jetblue Park on Saturday. “This is the first time that during the spring formation we managed to do some work. But it has come to lengths.
“So I think he has come to long paths, especially turning double plays, which is actually something that was not used to being on his blind side,” Flores added. “I think it has come to long paths and feels much more comfortable doing it.”
The Red Sox have also worked on the Campbell launch mechanics since entering the organization. There were some of the questions about his arm coming out of Georgia Tech. Focus has been “Put the mechanical sound.”
As a left camper on Thursday, Campbell launched heavily from the left field line to the second base to launch the Byron Buxton twins, who sought to extend a single to a double.
“He is using his legs properly in everything he does almost,” Flores said. “Even when he played in the field out of the other day, we saw him make a play on the line, throwing Byron Buxton in the second base. He was able to finish the double plays, which is huge for us. So I don’t see the arm being a problem.”
Flores said they will continue to “work in all areas” of Campbell’s defense in second place.
“Because this is the first time he has played in the almost everyday base,” Flores said. “That said, there will be some plays that may appear for a day that you are like” Oh, this is something we should direct at some point. “
Which area is responsible for the area, Alex Cora, that Campbell improves defensively?
“Returning to the double play and has done a good job with him,” said Cora. “The range is there.
Cora said that the “underlying numbers” of Campbell are offensively in the right direction.
“He is hitting the ball and not chasing. So he is a good beat, man,” Cora said.
