In the letter referred to Thursday evening, federal officials demanded Columbia immediately to put their department for the Middle Eastern, South Asian and African Studies under “Academic Receipt for at least five years”.

Officials from the Department of Education, General Service Administration and the Department of Health and Human Services emphasized the urgency of the situation, writing, “We expect your immediate compliance with these critical ones.”
This action means significant escalation in the Trump Administration campaign to reshape academic institutions.
It coincides with federal immigration officials who target certain student protesters, including Mahmoud Khalil, a pro-Palestinian activist arrested over the weekend for their involvement in the Demonstration at Columbia University.

No one was arrested or detained, according to the temporary president of the University, Katrina Armstrong, who said that “heart” was to the news.
