Oscar De La Hoya blasted Bill Haney’s manager on this week’s episode of Clapback Thursdays, saying he ruined his son Devin Haney’s career by suing Ryan Garcia for exaggeration after a loss last April in Brooklyn, New York.
Oscar: Fire your father, Devin!
De La Hoya says Devin needs to take control of his life and “fire” Bill. He thinks his decisions ruined what was once a promising career for the former two-division world champion.
Oscar says the lawsuit and Devin’s decision to sit idle for a year made his loss that much worse. Hanay (31-0, 15 KOs) could have bounced back from that loss by now if he had gotten back in the ring instead of sitting and fighting his loss.
According to De La Hoya, Henney must win his May 2 fight against Jose Ramirez to earn a rematch against Ryan in October.
If that’s true, there will be a lot of pressure on Devin when he faces former WBC and WBO 140lb champion Ramirez (29-2, 18 KOs) in their joint fight on the undercard of Ryan Garcia vs. Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero in New York’s Times Square .
“I feel sorry for Devin Haney because you can hardly hear him speak because his dad does all the talking,” Oscar De La Hoya said during this week’s Clapback Thursdays. “Sure, Devin had a bad loss this year, but it shouldn’t have ended his career. It could have been easily fixed.
“Had it not been for his father and manager, Bill, who single-handedly turned it into a more toxic situation than Chernobyl.” I’ve never seen a big fucking mistake for a boxer’s career in my life. All Devin had to do after losing to Ryan Garcia last April was say, “He beat me. I couldn’t block his left hook and then get back into the gym.
“Instead of focusing on his comeback fight in 2024 and teaching his son to block a left hook, Bill thought it was a better idea for Devin to sue Ryan for violent impact and emotional distress, to sue Golden Boy, to sue the New York Athletic Commission.” to erase Devin’s loss from his record, to fight civilians at the Orange Country State Fair, to take the rest of the year off, and to make as many enemies as possible. They cemented their legacy as the biggest cry babies in boxing history.
“Now, last week, Bill and Devin were in London, begging Turki for a payout because they have no other options.” The only value Devin has in this sport is to fight Ryan Garcia again. So Bill, being the pimp that he is, once again took his son to the fighter who beat him so bad he had to sue him for beating him. I couldn’t make this shit up, people.
“The rematch (Garcia – Haney) will take place in October, but under one condition. The Haney’s must drop their lawsuit against Ryan Garcia and Golden Boy. Of course, the Haneys are willing to give it up because they have no case. I’ve never heard of a fighter suing another fighter for battery, and I’m sure we’ll never see it again unless Devin sues his next opponent.
Rematch on the Line: Haney vs. Ramirez
“Anyway, a rematch is a pretty risky move, because if Devin loses to Ryan again, we can all wave Honey goodbye.” In order for Devin to get that fight, he has to fight a tough and hungry Jose Ramirez in May. Take care, Jose. If you hit him too hard, he might sue you next.
“Devin Hanney, from one fighter to another, you need to take control of your life and career and fire your father. Everyone in the pit stood by and watched what happened this year, the year you were supposed to shine. Now you are the punchline. Everyone sees that he is a problem. He (Bill) didn’t even stop the fight with Ryan Garcia when your jaw was broken and you were on the canvas.
“I hope you come to your senses and decide to save yourself and part ways with your current manager before it’s too late.” Unfortunately, it may already be,” said De La Hoya.
