A rare winter storm hits the gulf coast states on tuesday, bringing hazardous travel conditions and bitter cold.
More than 4,200 flights were delayed or canceled within, into or out of the US by mid-morning – and major airports, such as Houston, temporarily suspended operations.
The major metro has warned its residents to be safe and stay off the roads so that first responders can easily navigate the icy roads.
“My grandchildren are excited to see snow, and as mayor, I take the safety of the city seriously despite all expectations. Please continue to stay home, do not risk your safety and leave the roads for our first responders,” Houston Mayor John Whitmire urged at a press briefing on Monday.
The storm left 27,000 customers without power in the Lone Star State.
Georgia has declared a state of emergency and schools are closed in states across the country. In New Orleans, this could be the biggest storm of its lifetime, according to a forecasting company AccuWeather.
Arctic air is expected to bring historic snowfall, with rates of an inch per hour or more from eastern Texas to the western Florida Panhandle.
