Shakur Stevenson says he would like to talk to Gervont Davis on the phone to try to convince him to fight him without a promoter involved.
Tank’s Disdain
Stephenson likes to try to set up a fight like Terence Crawford did with Errol Spence in 2023. However, Shakur (22-0, 10 KOs) doesn’t think Gervonta would go along with the idea because he has “some crap against me. “
It’s true that Tank doesn’t like runners, and Shakur doesn’t belong in this era. His dated, archaic Mayweather style is from a bygone era.
It could be that Tank (30-0, 28 KOs) was put off by Shakur’s desperate obsession with him, the mention of his name in interviews, the rush to promote his fights and the fact that he’s not a fun fighter. Davis would be tied in a head-to-head battle, and Shakur would only be there as a cardboard prop.
If Shakur could have built his name by beating quality fighters and staying in the trade pocket instead of running, he wouldn’t have had to beg Gervonta for a fight. Because of booing in repeated fights out of boredom, Shakur is one of the lowest echelons of the castes in terms of boxing. He is unworthy to be in the presence of King Tank.

Now, I go and do the same kind of thing with Tank, and they’ll say, ‘He’s chasing a shot. He is jealous.’
“We are in a new generation. These people today, they have all these narratives. I said, ‘Let’s fight.’ I said, ‘Send the contract and we can make it.’ I am not a deceptive (person). I’m not going out there to say anything.
“I’m not going to act like I’m the A-side, and I deserve 50-50 (for the tank fight). Brother, let’s negotiate and see where it goes from there. I know I’m the B-side, but let’s fight,” Shakur said.
The King and the Shortcut
Stevenson sounds stupid, thinking that all he has to do is say, “Let’s fight,” to win the fight against Gervonta. That’s not how it works. He needs to take on better opposition, stop the run, look good and stop the fans from booing him 24/7. If all the candidates had to say, “Let’s fight,” to get a chance to meet the king, they’d all do it. It doesn’t work that way.
If Shakur wants to take a shortcut against Gervonta, he has to do something bold, like in the days of knights and King Arthur. He should move up to 154 and beat Bahram Murtazali or Virgil Ortiz Jr. If Stevenson did that, his popularity would skyrocket, and he would have no problem going up against Tank.
