The New England Patriots have a head coach vacancy after them fired Jerod Mayo Sunday after a season.
The movement came after New England beat the Buffalo Bills in their Week 18 finale with the team owner Robert Kraft calling him one of the most difficult decisions had to do
There are other teams in need of a new coach for the 2025 season, including the Chicago Bears, Las Vegas Raiders and Jacksonville Jaguars. But if it were between the Bears and the Patriots, Dan Orlovsky picks New England.
“I’d pick New England over Drake Maye,” the former NFL quarterback told the show “Get Up!” of ESPN. “I think the young man has a chance to be an absolute superstar. I think he has a chance to be Josh Allen.”
poisoningwho was drafted with the third overall pick in 2024, was a bright spot during an abysmal season for the Patriots. He showed flashes of his potential and showed he could be the franchise quarterback. Maye showed growth each week and finished his rookie season with 2,276 yards, 421 rushing yards and completed 66.6% of his passes.
Another intriguing part for the The Patriots’ next coach it’s the fact that they have the fourth overall pick in this year’s draft and plenty of money to spend with an important offseason ahead of them.
“They have the No. 4 pick. They have $130 million in salary cap space.” Orlovsky said. “I can go get Tee Higgins and draft Ohio State’s Emeka Egbuka, and all of a sudden we have a really good, up-and-coming football team. He could draft LSU’s Will Campbell and protect (Maye).
“I think that’s the place it’s going to be, for an offensive-minded coach, if you’re one, a Ben Johnson, I think that’s the place you want to go.”
The patriots have asked to interview Johnsonwho is the offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions. Mike Vrabel has also been connected with New England.
After a 3-14 season, whoever the new coach is will be under a lot of pressure to turn the franchise around and get back to their winning ways. The Patriots missed the playoffs for the third straight season and have an offseason ahead of them with some big-name free agents they could spend money on and give Maye a true No. 1 target.
