Parts of the country could see 25cm of snow on Sunday
Part of the region could see up to 25 cm of snow on Sunday, according to the National Highways Agency.
A severe weather warning for snow will be in place of England until midnight.
In the north, nearly a foot of snow could cover the A628 Woodhead Pass road, linking Greater Manchester and South Yorkshire.
Drivers should avoid ice, the National Highways Agency has warned, if rain falls on frozen ground.

Flights to take off from Manchester Airport after the patch bridge

In a social media post, Newcastle said: “The airport continues to experience heavy and continuous snow and teams are working across the site to keep passengers and colleagues safe.
“We continue to see some confusion in the flight schedule and recommend that travelers visit our website or app for the latest flight information, or contact their airline.”
The poor weather is currently affecting various train routes as Great Western Railway, Northern Railway, ScotRail and TransPennine Express services may also be affected.
Leeds Bradford Airport says it intends to re-open its bridge later today.
“The bridge is currently closed, our crews are working hard to clear the snow and minimize the impact on flight schedules,” he said in a statement.
“We hope to reopen the bridge before 12pm, however this is subject to change.”
Manchester airport closes
Manchester Airport has just ditched both runways after closing them this morning.
In a statement on 10, Manchester said that some departures and arrivals “may still experience delays as teams work to de-ice aircraft and open walkways”.
“Please check with your airline for the latest flight information and allow extra travel time today,” the airport added.
Liverpool John Lennon Airport Bridge will open at 10:15. It advises that there are flight delays and urges people to contact the airline directly.

The charity asks drivers to keep antifreeze in labeled, sturdy, sealed containers out of harm’s way; clean up even small balls immediately and make sure animals are excluded from the area until it is clean.
“Pets die every year from accidental poisoning from antifreeze overflows and leaks, as well as from water dripping from car coolant, but most of these deaths are preventable,” the RSPCA says.
“During the coldest months, your cat needs access to a warm environment, such as your home or other indoor heating,” advises the charity.

“A safety meeting was held this morning to assess the weather and travel conditions for today’s fixture against Manchester United at Anfield,” Liverpool’s statement read.
“At this stage, the match has been proposed to proceed as normal and every effort is made to make it wild,” he added.
“In addition, a security meeting will take place again at noon to assess the latest situation.”
