Daniel Sams was carried off the field on a stretcher on Friday after a nasty collision with a teammate Cameron Bancroft during a Big Bash League the game.
The Sydney Thunder pair were in action against the Perth Scorchers when they chased the same ball, butting heads in the process.
The incident left Bancroft, 32, with a bloody nose, but was able to get up and leave the field of his own accord, while Sams was in a worse condition. Sams, also 32, required a stretcher and was taken off the field before play resumed.
The game, at Optus Stadium in Perth, was stopped for 12 minutes when it resumed.
The Sydney Thunder wrote on social media that “both players are conscious and talking, showing concussion symptoms and possible fractures. Both were transported to the hospital for evaluation.”
The collision occurred during the first innings as Sams and Bancroft followed a shot by Cooper Connolly.
“It was a terrible collision,” Fox Cricket commentator Mel Jones said. “There is concern here. Both players fully committed to the ball, aiming at it. We didn’t see them coming.
“This is what you don’t want to see, the medical staff right there. The biggest concern is about Daniel Sams.
“There are good signs there because Cam Bancroft is on his feet, actually walking off the ground. It looks like some damage has been done to his nose. Such courage. They both had their eyes on the ball.”
Perth ended their innings on 177-4 with Connolly on 43 not out. Ollie Davies and Hugh Weibgen replaced Bancroft and Sams in the Thunder’s batting order for their innings, coming on as concussion replacements.
