Barcelona applied for the player licenses of Dani Ulmo and Pau Víctor with the FA (RFEF) on Tuesday, with the club denying that they had requested any delay from the governing bodies for their registrations.
The announcement was made hours before the midnight registration deadline.
Barcelona lost another appeal as players for the rest of the season on Monday, when the club face the La Liga wage cap.
“Barcelona informs that it has applied for a new license for players Daniel Ulmo and Pau Victor to RFEF,” the Catalan club said in a statement. “The club denied that it had received any request or moratorium to govern the body of these letters.”
Barcelona signed for Ulm in August for around €55m (£45m), but the attacking midfielder was only reported for the first half of the season.
The club to sign Ulmo and Víctor forward after long-term injuries played first team players from the squad for months, allowing them to invest part of the salary. Article 77 of La Liga rules allows clubs to temporarily use up to 80% of a player’s salary in either case of injury.
Efforts to extend both registrations have been repeatedly blocked, with Barcelona’s appeals dismissed by La Liga and various judicial authorities.
While Ulmo and Víctor will be free agents after the deadline, Barcelona could meet the financial requirements to sign them before the transfer market closes in February. However, according to RFEF rules, a player cannot be signed by the same club twice at the same time. Ulmo, the Spain international, has a clause in his contract that allows him to leave unilaterally if the club’s record fails.
Barcelona plan to raise funds by selling VIP box seats at the Camp Nou stadium, potentially generating over €100m in cash, subject to La Liga approval.
The Spanish league said later on Tuesday, however, that Barcelona “did not provide any alternative, in order to, in the financial regulations of La Liga, allow themselves to register any player until Jan. 2.”
The club is currently third in La Liga, trailing leaders Atlético Madrid by three points, and will play against Barbastro in the Copa del Rey on Saturday.
