Mass. weather: Heavy rain expected on New Year’s Eve

New Year’s Eve-goers across Massachusetts should plan to pack their umbrellas as they ring in 2025.

National Weather Service meteorologists say heavy rain and a few embedded thunderstorms are possible in the Bay State between 10 p.m. Tuesday and 2 a.m. Wednesday, just in time for the new year.

Precipitation is expected first in the western part of the state, starting in the evening in Springfield, then around 10 p.m. in Worcester and reaching Boston around 11 p.m. In total, up to an inch could fall rain in the Bay State as 2024 turns into 2025.

But ahead of the rain, forecasters say dry conditions and above-normal temperatures will make for a relatively quiet New Year’s Eve. High temperatures should be in the upper 40s or even low 50s. Temperatures will eventually drop to 30 degrees.

Showers will continue on Wednesday as temperatures remain in the 40s and 50s, though it won’t be a wash. A trend toward cooler weather will arrive on Thursday, and temperatures are expected to drop into the teens on Sunday.
