Keir Starmer is one of Labour’s strongest members of parliament according to a study of the political positions of MPs from all major parties.
The prime minister has less left than almost all of his 401s Work colleagues, from research with Chris Hanretty, professor of politics at Royal Holloway, University of London.
The study also showed a conservative leader; Kemi Badenochhe sits to the right of his party with a scurvy, who puts his political stance closer to Nigel Farage, the head of UK Reform, than most of his party.
Hanretty he said to the Times: “Before Brexit, I said that it was common for prime ministers to be more centrally located than the majority of their party. [David] Cameron was just to the left of the Conservative Party [Tony] Blair was to the right of the Labor Party.”
Hanretty and his team wrote the results asking 1,006 local councilors to get their MPs and place them against their party leaders. They did it in the same study yearbut this is the first time that the political opinions of the most recent MPs have been recorded in this way, since more than half of them were elected for the first time this year.
MPs were rated on a scale of 0 to 100, with 0 being the most left and 100 being the most right. Independent MPs are not included.
Labour’s Nadia Whittome and Diane Abbott came out as the most left-wing MPs from the major party, with 74. Rupert Lowe of the UK Reform and Suella Braverman of the Conservatives were judged farthest to the right, with a 95 rating.
Starmer’s rating of 48 puts him roughly in the middle of the Commons, but to the right of almost the entire parliamentary party.
